This novel study guide is designed to use with high-level 2nd and 4rd grade students, and was specifically designed with gifted learners in mind. The level of depth in questioning and discussion will be at the teacher’s discretion, based on student need and readiness.

The main focus of this unit was to guide students to analyze text on a deeper level, gaining rich understandings of theme and descriptive language. Students will need to think, infer, and cite text evidence to support their answers.

Students will meet objectives for deep thinking using a combination of discussion, independent and/or group readings (including close reading of selected sections), and answering high-level questions based on the icons of Depth and Complexity. These questions are designed to be high level and open-ended, so that students have to think critically about them to arrive at an answer, rather than straight from the text. Many questions will help students form deeper understandings of global concepts, which will aid in discussion, as well as culminating writing and extension tasks.

Upon completion of this novel, students will have a greater appreciation for the rich descriptive language used by the author, as well as a deep understanding of the themes of relationships, friendship, and community presented in the novel.
